.Hi, I'm Stacy Heydt and I created Fun Fibers.
Fun Fibers is a design studio dedicated to sharing mylove of nature, farming and art by creating art kits using fiber from our farm's alpacas. Currently everything is done on our farm - we raise the alpacas and shear them. I sort the fiber, send some fiber to the mill to make yarn and use the some for creating our kits. We have quite a color pallet in our pasture. I wash the fiber, dye it and pick it into clouds to create the color pallets for the kits.
My husband and I have owned alpacas since 2001. Education about the animals and how to work with their fiber has always been an important part of our farming mission. I've spent years learning the methodology to creating the softest yarn possible. Once mastered, I began teaching and have been asked to speak at our national conferences and at farms around the country,.
I've been a member of the national alpaca association's (Alpaca Owner's Association's, AOA) Fiber Committee since 2009. I'm currently the Chair of the their Fiber and Fiber Product's committee. I judge Spin-Off and Fiber Arts and Skein competitions for the national show and local affiliates. I've studied dilligently and met many fleece judging requirements..
My fiber training, love of education and speaking engagements led me to write a How-To book on working with alpaca fiber. The Fiber Factor - A Simplified Guide to Alpaca Fiber offers step by step instructions to the new (and experienced) alpaca owner on how to shear, sort, grade and prepare huacaya and suri fleeces for show and processing. It soon became the "must have" reference book for alpaca owners.
With the popularity of my reference book, a children's book came to mind. Everything I talk about in my workshops and seminars on what to do with alpaca fiber from shearing to creating products, came alive in this educational, humorous, engaging and wittingly illustrated book.
Farmer Blue and his fashionista wife have many problems to solve as they move from the big city to a small farm nearby to raise alpacas. While they are going through the process of building a studio, working with fiber and ultimately creating a farm store, the alpacas are growing more fiber for next year's harvest.
Designing fiber art kits was the final piece in connecting children (and adults) to today's agricultural world.
My current focus is to make these kits available to alpaca farmers to put in their farm store as a way to connect their visitors with the animals through fun art projects that features the alpaca's fiber.
My company is experiencing expotential growth in this area. If you would like to purchase a kit, please contact a local alpaca farm and ask them to carry these products.
You can also purchase them from my on-line store or any of the fiber festivals or alpaca shows that I or my customer's will be attending.
